Exploring Story and Imagination in Second Grade Art Class

This week, our second graders at Saint Mary School stepped into the colorful world of storytelling and imagination during art class with Ms. Atherley. Gathered in a circle, they listened with wonder as she read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow—a timeless American classic that stirs curiosity and creativity.

For our students, this wasn’t just story time; it was a journey through art, literature, and faith. Through the lens of Catholic Classical Education, stories like Sleepy Hollow become more than tales—they become gateways to truth, beauty, and goodness. The students reflected on the emotions and imagery within the story, connecting what they heard to the creative process that follows in art.

In the days ahead, their inspiration will take shape in art projects that express imagination and reflection, where even lines and colors can speak of God’s design.

At Saint Mary School, we believe that beauty and creativity lead the soul toward wonder—and that wonder is the beginning of wisdom.
